Abstract :

This paper identified the forms and motifs of Yoruba Drums; analyzed the forms and motifs of Yoruba drums; and established the significance of the forms and motifs of Yoruba Drums. All of these are intended to document its aesthetics. It was observed that the drums of the Western part of Nigeria (The Yoruba People) are seen to be similar in forms, sizes, and shapes, whereas only the functions of the drums seem to be different. For example, the Igbin drum in (plate 4) and the Ipese drum in (plate 5) are seen to be
very similar in shape and form but different in usage. The study succeeded in analyzing the designs and motifs found on the drums which were discovered to be indigenous to the Yoruba people. The Yoruba musical drums are unique in form and are embellished
with symbolic motifs that have very important significance in the Yoruba culture as reflected in folklore, proverbs, religious rituals, and initiation rites. The collection of information for this research work was obtained through both primary and secondary sources. The primary source of data was obtained through personal interviews with traditional drum markers during which photographs of a variety of embellished drums were taken. Substantial and relevant information was acquired through interviews with lecturers in both the Music and Dramatic Art Department that is related to the course of research. The secondary sources were collected through literature like textbooks, magazines, journals, and publications. Recording devices were used for personal interviews with traditional drum makers.
