Abstract :

This paper explored the paradigm shift in a digital era and the impact of citizen journalism on rural development. With the advent of the internet otherwise called the ―digital age or era‖, journalism practice has taken a paradigm shift as citizens and indeed the ordinary people in the streets are now empowered to partake in the process of news gathering, reporting and sharing without the undue bureaucracy and hegemony that characterized the conventional journalism practice. This has not only made journalism practice less cumbersome but also very effective. The study focused on Ogwashi-Uku and the survey research was used to sample 398 respondents from the projected population of Ogwashi-Uku which includes 77,561 people. The questionnaire was used as an instrument for gathering data and was administered to the respondents directly by the researchers. Based on the literature and empirical studies revealed, it was found among others that citizen journalism contributes greatly to rural development advocacy as rural dwellers and development agents have effectively utilized the new media and the opportunities presented by citizen journalism to advocate for rural inclusiveness in development drives in Nigeria. It was thus recommended among others that to achieve greater efficiency in the use of citizen journalism for rural development advocacy, there is a need to ensure that citizen journalists are trained on the codes and ethics of the journalism profession
